Anime is an integral part of my childhood, and my fallback through awkward puberty and teenage angst! Coming of age anime is a must if you want to reminisce about childhood days, and if you’re still in those days, then there’s much to be learned from them!
So I bring to you, my list of Top 5 coming of age anime!
Now we’ve all been acquainted with Naruto, Bleach, Death Note, One Piece and the like. So I’m choosing to overlook these illustrious gems!
I would like to express, that this is my personal list and I am not claiming these to be the best of the best. I’m sure that all you anime fans will each have your own personal lists. If so, share the love! Kuma and I are always in need of anime recommendations!
On with the list!
1. CardCaptor Sakura
10 year old middle schooler Sakura stumbles upon a book in her basement, and accidentally releases magical Clow Cards into the city.
The guardian of the cards, Cerberus (who she later nickname’s Kero) befriends her and chooses her as the Card Captor.
She must capture each card with the help of Kero and her best friend Tomoyo, who designs the most adorable and badass costumes for Sakura to wear on her Card Capturing missions!
Sakura was the first female character I was introduced to, that battled magical creatures, while dealing with middle school; making new friends, getting good grades, and experiencing first crushes!

2. Detective School Q
Along with Ryū, Megumi, Kazuma and Kintarō, who are a diverse group of oddballs, Kyū becomes a part of special class ‘Q’. They help solve crimes, murders and seemingly supernatural occurrences under the guidance of their mentor Dan Morihiko.
Class Q learns the value of teamwork and friendship, and help a lot of unfortunate people along the way, making their mentor proud!
This show is highly advanced for youngins, it has dark themes, and can be a tad scary at times. I would hide under my blanket fort while watching this show, half enthralled and half terrified!
The mysteries and their revelations are absolutely mind-boggling and very well thought out! If you love a thrill, this show is for you!
3. Ouran High School Host Club
Haruhi Fujioka is a hardworking scholarship student, who has absolutely no time to look after her appearance. A true plebeian! She sticks out like a sore thumb at Ouran High School, which only the elite rich have the privilege to attend. So much so, that her poor appearance makes her look like a boy!
One day she stumbles into the Ouran High School Host Club, a group of rich good looking boys, that play the role of ‘hosts’ by dressing up and flirting with their fellow female students for fun.
Unfortunately for Haruhi, she knocks over a ¥8,000,000 vase which leads to her becoming the host club’s errand boy.
Slowly they realise that she’s in fact a girl, but her mysterious and calm persona, makes her perfect host material! In order to pay off her debt, she pretends to be a boy and becomes a part of the host club!
This is hands down, the funniest anime I have ever seen in my life! It has it’s emotional moments too, as each host club member opens up to Haruhi, and they form the friendship of a lifetime!
4. Kyo Kara Maoh!
Yuri is your average high school student, that catches a group of bullies messing with his classmate. He confronts them, and in turn gets his head shoved into a toilet.
He must now learn to live at the castle, surrounded by a hilarious set of characters, and hone his demon powers to help the people of the land.
This show is absolutely wacky and you’ll never guess what will happen next! But the characters’ selflessness and camaraderie will definitely make you fall in love with them!
Two girls are heading to Tokyo with very different goals. One wants her rock band Black Stones to make it big in the city, and gain fame and fortune, and the other wants to follow in her friends and boyfriend’s path so that she can achieve true happiness and romance.
Although they both share the same name Nana, they couldn’t be further apart in personality and ideals.
Through a series of run-ins with each other, they decide to live in the city together, and end up becoming best friends.
Not only do they help each other get through a lot of pain and sorrow, they are able to see each other’s situations from a completely different point of view.
This anime is for all of us bright-eyed and hopeful twenty-somethings that are trying to find themselves. It is wonderfully heart wrenching and will make you want to run to your best friend and give him/her a big bear hug!
